Chain plays a vital role in power transmission. If a chain is not rigid enough or imprecisely structural combined, it is easy to wear out and elongate the chain, effecting its transmission efficiency, smoothness, vibration, howling, service life, etc. or more importantly, the chian might break during operation.

There are five key factors to determine a quality chain: pin rigidity, quality of the rubber seal, wear resistance, fatigue strength and precision of the assembly

Pin rigidity

Excellent rigidity of the pin can prevent it from bending.

Since chain must withstand the force of rapid acceleration and deceleration, therefore a bended pin can cause the chain to seize up, wear, and even more severely, lead to chain breakage.

The key factors affecting the quality of the pin are: the material of the pin, heat treatment, surface treatment,  overall structure of the chain, and the precision of the assembling.

A quality pin must have rigid surface, tough inner core, and it also need to be perfectly rounded and anti-wear. Additionally,  it will not be distorted and be very smooth at the moment of acceleration.

Quality of the rubber seal

The purpose of the sealed ring is to seal the lubrication which was sucked in around the pin and bush via vacuum. The ring is able to keep the dirt out, increasing wear resistance and longer wear life.

However,  the ring can increase the overall weight of the chain, as the result, increase dragging during operation that distrub the power transmission.

To avoid such negative impact, AM improves the O-ring to Cross-ring design to reduce resistence, smoothness, and better sealing.

Wear resistence

The main reason for chain elongation is caused by the wearing between the pin and the bush, nothing to do with the tensile strength of the material. In the case of weak wear resistance of the chain, deformation and elongation will occur easily, resulting in unsmooth operation, reduced power transmission efficiency, vibration, shorten service life etc.
The rigidness of the pin, the heating technique of the bush, together with the roundness of pin and bush, and the precision of the assembly are all affecting resistency of the chain elongation. Those are the keys in determining the performance and service life of the chain.

Fatigue strength

It means that the chain can endure various loading under certain force without metal fatigue which might casue the chain to break.
The primary condition is relying on the strengh of the plate and pin, as the result, finding the right chain based on the specification of your motorcycle become crucial to avoid such damage to happen.

Overall performance

In the transmission system, the chain plays an important role. However, the combination of the chain with other tramission components is vital to make performance of the transmission system extremely effective.
In addition to the crucial factors listed above, it is also required extreme quality control of specifications of the components, gaps between components, collocations and assembly process of the chain components in order to maximize the overall performance of the chain. They are all related to the structural specifications and precisely control of the manufacturing.
